TV Interview: Robin Hood star Lara Pulver talks lions, ladies, and mistaking actors for air hostesses

Lara Pulver plays Isabella in the BBC drama Robin Hood
The Robin Hood star tells Jessica Holland all about her latest role in BBC drama Robin Hood...
APPARENTLY you’ve been swordfighting and battling lions on the Robin Hood set...
It was great, like throwing a bunch of actors back into a school playground. We got to do everything from horse riding to fighting. And there is a lion in the series.
Can we expect some hot romance between your character and Robin?
Isabella is a vulnerable woman who’s been abused in her past marriage and is very much looking for the love of a good man. That’s all I can say.
Does she come in to replace Maid Marian?
She’s definitely the new female lead in the show, but she’s not a replacement. She’s a very clever girl who knows how to use her femininity to get what she needs. She’s got a natural fire and zest about her.
What was your big break?
I did a two-hander at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London Bridge, which is a brilliant fringe venue, then I started working at the Donmar, where I got an Olivier nomination for Parade. Those places are producing some of the most sexy, cutting-edge work there is.
How was it, getting that nomination?
They called to let me know just before I was about to do this Q & A session at a school. So I had to sit there, when I just wanted to scream: “I’ve got an Olivier nomination!”
Which actors have inspired you?
Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Imelda Staunton are three women I really admire. Helen Mirren came to the Donmar to see Parade and I met her and her husband, who was like [in US accent]: “The girl! I love the girl!” I took that as a compliment.
You’ve just been offered the lead in a new Brit movie, Roundheads and Cavaliers, opposite your husband [actor Joshua Dallas]. Is that weird?
Oh, it’s very much an ensemble. It’s about four couples, and it’s a complete coincidence we’re both in it. It’s really exciting, because it will be my first feature film.
Can you remember when you started acting?
As a kid, I’d put on little plays and make my family sit and watch, then I’d get my mum’s perfume bottles and pretend to sell them at the interval. I think I’d got being an actor mixed up with being an air hostess.
Lara is in Robin Hood from Saturday, 7.20pm, BBC One
